Five Steps to Your Mortgage Loan Originator License
1. Create a National Mortgage Licensing System (NMLS) Account
Before logging onto NMLS, individuals must create an NMLS Individual user account. Applicants may do so by clicking here.
Be sure to bring your NMLS number to class. We will need to report your successful completion of the course to NMLS.
2.Successfully complete the required 20-hour SAFE course
New applicants must complete the 20 Hour SAFE course in order to obtain a Mortgage Originator License. Existing licensees must complete the 20 hours OR have their Texas Savings Mortgage & Loan pre-licensure education certified.
3.Take the SAFE Mortgage Loan Originator Test
There are two portions to the SAFE Mortgage Loan Originator Test: the National portion and the State portion.
4.Submit a Criminal Background Check (CBC) and file an MU4
All licensees must submit fingerprints through NMLS for a criminal background check and must provide authorization to obtain a credit report at the time of filing an MU4 in NMLS.
Click Here to submit a CBC and file an MU4.
5.Receive your Mortgage Loan Originator License
Once a candidate has passed the National Exam they must submit MU4 Form to the National Mortgage Licensing System.
